What caused war was the uncompromising differneces between the free slave states over the power of national government to stop the slavery of the War. What soliders did on there free time when they were at camp and not at war was a lot of things.Some of the things they did was played dominos, writing letters to there loved ones that they missed really bad, they also played poker and many other games at camp. And they sometimes just sit and talk to there buddies about things with there family and what will the next say bring for them. What the soliders ate while they were gone at war and at the camp was not the best food they would eat but they had to eat it to stay alive and drink what ever they had at camp on on them when they went to war. Some of the stuff they ate and drank was salt pork, corn meals and what ever fruit and vegtables they could find or they had with them.They only had a few things to drink and they were coffe and water. And many soliders died from dehydrogation and starvation in the war were some soliders didnt get any thing at all.
